Credit Improvement

With more and more goods and services commonly requiring a credit check, it is especially important to ensure you have a good credit record, and that the information held about you is accurate. This has further increased in importance recently, with the economic climate meaning that it is more difficult for even those with good credit histories to gain credit, making it essential for those with bad credit to rebuild their history for when credit becomes easier to access.

Your credit history will be held by one or more of three credit reference agencies, which are Experian, Equifax and Callcredit. These companies hold information on your address and how long you have lived there, your current credit taken out, previous credit that you have had, any missed repayments, and details of legal action such as county court judgements. Lenders like to see consistency in credit histories - for example, a long time at a single address. If information like this is incorrect, you can apply to the credit reference agency for a notice of correction or a notice of dispute, and a solicitor can help you decide which is the most appropriate route, and what information to include. You can also seek advice if you are one of the 100,000 annual cases where there has been criminal activity - meaning that someone else has taken out credit in your name, or has associated themselves with your credit file. Again, there is legal action you can take, and a solicitor can help you rectify your file and to track the perpetrator of the fraudulent activity.
