Criminal

In 2008 there were over five million arrests made in England and Wales alone, and, owing to new police initiatives, it is likely that police will continue to use the full extent of their powers wherever possible, potentially keeping this figure high well into the future. However, around three quarters of all those arrested are eventually released without charge, meaning it is easy to be brought into the justice system, but also possible to avoid harsher consequence with the right advice.

When at a police station, you always have the right to a solicitor, and you should insist on seeing one before being interviewed by the police. If the police decide it is worth taking the case further, the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) will be brought in to take the case to trial.

It is important to gain proper legal advice to avoid you inadvertently 'admitting' to a crime you did not commit, or giving information that can be used against you that you did not give. Legal advice will also advise you of your rights when dealing with the criminal justice system, to ensure that you are treated fairly.

Choosing the right solicitor means finding someone with the correct skills and experience for your case, and, even for seemingly insignificant cases, doing this can make the process less lengthy and demanding. A specialist will have experience of the common problem areas when dealing with the police and the prosecution or court service, and will be able to act in your best interests.
