Motoring and Driving Offences (general speeding, drink driving)

Due to a government clamp down on road traffic accidents, motoring offences can carry much more strict punishments than many people realise. Throughout the last decade, the number of people charged with careless driving has increased by 20% to 30% every year, although other more serious driving offences have fallen. Those caught driving whilst over the legal alcohol limit face a minimum of a 12 month driving ban (for which your employer is entitled to end your employment), a maximum £5000 fine and up to six months in prison. The penalties for death by dangerous driving can be even more severe, with up to a possible 14 years in prison and at least a two year driving ban (plus a requirement for a retest after the ban period). If you are found to be over the limit, an experienced lawyer will be able to handle legal proceedings to minimise the punishment given, or perhaps to challenge the evidence presented and to advise you to help minimise any other impacts, such as on employment.

Finding the right lawyer might also be the key to taking advantage of some of the more innovative outcomes available to those charged with motoring offences in different parts of the country. For example, some police forces now offer the opportunity to take a course, rather than a fine and points on your licence. An experienced solicitor is best placed to know of such schemes and be in a position to negotiate them as an option.
