Wills

Making a will is one of the most important things you can do to ensure the financial security of those around you, on a similar level to making sure that you have adequate life insurance. If you leave behind an unmarried parter for example, they may not receive anything if you do not include them in a will, even if you have cohabited for a number of years or have children together. Despite this, around three quarters of people in Britain die every year without having made a will, meaning that their estate is divided up according to standard government rules (known as 'intestacy' rules), which can differ significantly to your wishes.

There are a number of cheap 'do it yourself' packages available on the internet to help you make a will yourself, but government advice remains that you should use a professional to draft a will for you, as there are particular legal formalities that must be adhered to, to ensure that the will is valid. As well as including what possessions you have, who they should be divided between and who should care for any of your dependants, your will also allows you to specify an executor. This is someone you trust to administer your estate in accordance with your wishes. Using a professional also has the advantage that they are able to store the will securely for you, and gives your next of kin someone external to contact in the event of your death, meaning your estate can be administered more quickly and with less hassle to those you leave behind.
